Limited seats for Ash Wednesday

KOTA KINABALU: In view of the present standard operating procedure (SOP) for churches to open its doors to 45 parishioners only, St Simon Catholic Church Likas is offering some limited seats to early birds.

Registration is now open for those who would like to attend the Ash Wednesday service in the main church this coming Wednesday. Please register at the following link: https://bit.ly/ashwednesdaymass.

Those attending are advised to read the SOP carefully (attached in automated e-mail response after registration) and ensure that they are strictly adhered to.

Meanwhile, parishioners who are unable to attend Mass physically need not worry as the service will be live-streamed as well.

Preparing your ashes at home… Burn the dried palms from the previous Palm Sunday. However, if unavailable, the faithful can still use any kind of dried leaves.
All set… Prepare only as much as needed for members of the household. No need to add holy water as the ashes will be sprinkled on the crown of the head instead of traced on the forehead as was the norm before the pandemic.

For parishioners who are still unsure of how to go about in making the ashes, seminarian Wilson Francis helped sum up the statement by Archbishop John Wong in a nutshell.

“The faithful can use leaves that are completely dry to get the ashes.

“Make sure that the leaves are completely dry. Just light them up and wait until they are completely burnt,” he said on Monday.

Those who do not have old palms from the previous Palm Sunday can use any other dried leaves.

Wilson said there is no need to add holy water on the burnt ashes as they will be placed on the crown of the head instead of tracing the forehead as was the norm before the pandemic.
