HAPPY 60TH MALAYSIA DAY! A Mass for Love and Tolerance

Kota Kinabalu – 17 September 2023 — The St Simon Catholic Church Likas community here joyously celebrated the Malaysia Day Mass today, 17 September 2023 to commemorate the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963.  Led by Parish Assistant Priest, Fr Rhobby, and both Sunday morning Masses were celebrated in the national language, Bahasa Malaysia, creating a unifying experience for all in attendance.

In his sermon, Fr Rhobby said church and politics should not mix, as he reflected on the Gospel reading for the occasion: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.’ And they were amazed at him.” (Mark 12:17)

Fr Rhobby also urged the parishioners to continue to pray for the country’s peace and tolerance, especially among the multiracial and multi-religious community.  The St. Simon Catholic Church Likas community here joyously celebrated Malaysia Day with a dignified flag-raising ceremony during the morning services today, September 17, 2023.  Both Sunday morning services were conducted in the national language, Bahasa Malaysia, creating a unifying experience for all in attendance.

Following the inspiring morning services, the congregation gathered at the flagpoles outside the church, their hearts filled with pride and reverence, to sing the national and state anthems, “NegaraKu” and “Sabah Tanah AirKu,” respectively, led by the Choir. It was a heartfelt display of patriotism and unity on this special day.
